Motion Picture Sweepstakes Official Rules

Please note the following changes, posted Friday January 31 in response to reported postal problems.

  • The deadline for mail-in entries has been extended until midnight March 31 (see section 3).
  • A new post office box address has been provided (see section 5). Entries to the previous address (P.O. Box 1923) will still be received, although early January entries may have been returned to sender and will require resubmission.
  • The winner's drawing date has been revised accordingly (see section 6).

  1. Introduction: Decipher Inc. and Cinemark USA Inc.("Co-Sponsors") are offering THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS Sweepstakes. NO PURCHASE OR ONLINE ACCESS IS NECESSARY TO ENTER THE SWEEPSTAKES OR WIN A PRIZE.
  2. Eligibility: Void in Puerto Rico and where prohibited by law. Entrant must be a legal U.S. (excluding Puerto Rico) resident, 14 years or older as of date of entry. Employees of Co-Sponsors and New Line Cinema Corporation, their respective subsidiaries, affiliated companies, distributors and agents and the immediate family (defined as parents, spouse, children, siblings, grandparents) of such employees and all those living in the same household, are NOT eligible.
  3. Timing: Sweepstakes begins at 9:00 am (EST) on Tuesday, December 10, 2002 and ends at 11:59 pm (EST) on Friday January 31, 2003 for electronically submitted entries, and at 11:59pm (EST) on Monday March 31, 2003 for mail-in entries ("Entry Period").
  4. How to Enter Online: Sweepstakes is now closed to electronic entries; only mail-in entries are being accepted at this time.
  5. How to Enter by Mail: To enter the sweepstakes by mail, handprint your first and last name, date of birth, full mailing address including Zip/Postal Code, daytime phone number, evening phone number, and e-mail address (optional) on a 3" x 5" card, insert the card into a standard #10 business-size envelope (handprinted) and mail it with applicable first class postage to THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS, PO Box 56, Norfolk, Virginia 23501-0056. An unlimited number of mail-in entries will be accepted, provided that they are each on separate postcards and individually postmarked. Mail-in entries must be postmarked by March 31, 2003 and received by April 6, 2003 to be eligible for the prize drawing.
  6. Drawing: A random drawing will be held to select potential winners from all eligible entries received, on or about April 11, 2003 by Co-Sponsors and/or an independent judging organization, whose decisions are final and binding in all matters related to the sweepstakes. Each entrant selected as a potential prize winner must comply with all terms and conditions set forth in these Official Rules, and winning is contingent upon fulfilling all such requirements. Odds of winning a prize depend on the number of eligible entries received. Potential winners will be notified by e-mail (or by mail if no email address is provided) within five (5) days of the drawing. If a potential grand prize winner cannot be contacted within ten (10) days after the first attempt to contact such potential winner, or any winner notification or prize is returned as undeliverable for any reason, an alternate entrant may be selected in the place of the potential winner at random from among all eligible entries received.
  7. Prize/Approximate Retail Value ("ARV"): The following Prizes will be awarded: Grand Prize (1): Winner's choice of either a trip for winner and one (1) guest to New Zealand (Roundtrip airfare in economy class from LAX International in Los Angeles, California to Auckland, New Zealand and back to LAX International on Air New Zealand; 8 days Maui compact manual car rental; 7 nights "Go Kiwi" Silver Category Hotel Pass; and a copy of The Lord of the Rings Location Guidebook) (ARV: $3,300) or a cash award of $3,000.00. First Prize (20): The Lord of the Rings Role Playing Game (ARV: $29.95 each). Second Prize (30): The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers Trading Card Game Deluxe Starter Deck (ARV: $20.00 each). Third Prize (150): The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers booster packs (ARV: $3.29 each). ARV of all prizes: $4,992.50.
  8. Prize Conditions and Restrictions: Grand prize trip must be taken on the date(s) and with providers selected by the Co-Sponsors or prize will be forfeited and an alternate winner selected. Airline carrier's regulations and conditions apply. Trip may not be combined with any other offer and travel may not qualify for frequent flyer miles. Winner and guest must travel together on the same itinerary, from LAX International airport in Los Angeles, CA. If the travel guest is a minor, winner must be the guest's parent or legal guardian (who must sign all required documents). Winner and guest must possess valid travel documents (i.e., passports and valid photo ID) in order to travel. Certain restrictions may apply. Seat selection, hotel accommodations and car rental subject to availability. "Go Kiwi" Silver Category Hotel Pass is valid at participating hotels throughout New Zealand and is subject to terms and conditions of issuer. Hotel accommodations will be standard, double occupancy. Car rental portion of prize is subject to restrictions and other terms and conditions set forth by car rental company. If winner (or travel guest) does not meet the age or other rental car requirements, that portion of the prize will not be awarded and no other substitution or compensation will be provided. Suggested itinerary can be provided on request. All other expenses and costs not expressly listed herein as being awarded, including, but not limited to taxes, tips, entertainment, transfers, meals and ground transportation, are the winner's sole responsibility. No refunds or credit for changes are allowed. "Releasees" (as defined below) are not responsible for lost or mutilated travel certificates and none will be replaced. Prizes are non-transferable and must be accepted as awarded. No cash or other substitution may be made (unless specified above) except by Co-Sponsors in the event that a prize cannot be awarded for any reason, in which case, Co-Sponsors will award a prize of comparable or greater value. All taxes, fees and surcharges on prizes are the sole responsibility of the winner. All prizes are awarded "as is", with no warranty or guarantee, either express or implied.
  9. Other Terms and Conditions: Potential grand prize winner and guest may each be required to sign and return an Affidavit of Eligibility, Liability Release, and where lawful, a Publicity Release (travel guest will not be required to sign and return an Affidavit of Eligibility), within ten (10) days of issuance, failing which the potential winner will be disqualified and another winner selected in the place of the disqualified person at random from all entries received. If any prize or prize notification is returned as non-deliverable, the potential winner will be disqualified and another potential winner will be selected in the original potential winner's place. By accepting the prize, the winner agrees that the Co-Sponsors and those acting under the Co-Sponsors' authority, may use winner's name, picture/portrait likeness and/or voice, for advertising and promotional purposes without further consideration, unless prohibited by law. If an eligible minor is selected as a potential winner, the prize will be awarded to such minor's parent or legal guardian, who will be required to sign all documents and fulfill all required conditions as set forth in these Official Rules. BY ENTERING THE SWEEPSTAKES, EACH ENTRANT AGREES THAT THE CO-SPONSORS, NEW LINE CINEMA CORPORATION AND THEIR RESPECTIVE PARENT COMPANIES, SUBSIDIARIES, AFFILIATES, ADVERTISING AND PROMOTION AGENCIES, AND ALL OF THEIR RESPECTIVE OFFICERS, DIRECTORS, EMPLOYEES, SHAREHOLDERS, REPRESENTATIVES AND AGENTS (COLLECTIVELY, "RELEASEES"), WILL HAVE NO LIABILITY WHATSOEVER FOR, AND WILL BE HELD HARMLESS BY ENTRANT FOR ANY LIABILITY FOR ANY INJURY, LOSS OR DAMAGES OF ANY KIND TO PERSONS, INCLUDING DEATH, AND PROPERTY, DUE IN WHOLE OR IN PART, DIRECTLY OR INDIRECTLY, FROM THE ACCEPTANCE, POSSESSION, USE OR MISUSE OF ANY PRIZE, PARTICIPATION IN THIS SWEEPSTAKES OR PARTICIPATION IN ANY SWEEPSTAKES OR PRIZE RELATED ACTIVITY (INCLUDING TRAVEL). Subject to all applicable federal, state, and local laws.
  10. Miscellaneous: All entries become the sole property of Co-Sponsors and none will be returned. In the event of a dispute, entries made by Internet will be deemed made by the authorized account holder of the e-mail address submitted at the time of entry. The "authorized account holder" is deemed the natural person who is assigned to an e-mail address by an Internet access provider, service provider or other online organization that is responsible for assigning e-mail addresses for the domain associated with the submitted e-mail address. A potential winner may be requested to provide Co-Sponsors with proof that the potential winner is the authorized account holder of the e-mail address associated with the winning entry. If for any reason the sweepstakes is not capable of running as planned, including due to infection by computer virus, bugs, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failure, human error or any other causes beyond the control of Co-Sponsors that corrupt or affect the administration, security, fairness, integrity, or proper conduct of the sweepstakes, Co-Sponsors reserve the right in their sole discretion, to disqualify any individual who tampers with the entry process, and to cancel, terminate, modify or suspend the sweepstakes. Releasees assume no responsibility for any error, omission, interruption, deletion, defect, delay in operation or transmission, communications line failure, theft or destruction or unauthorized access to, or alteration of, entries. The Co-Sponsors are not responsible for any problems or technical malfunction of any telephone network or lines, computer online systems, servers, or providers, computer equipment, software, failure of any e-mail or entry to be received by Co-Sponsors on account of technical problems or traffic congestion on the Internet or at any web site, any combination thereof, or otherwise, including any injury or damage to entrant's or any other person's computer related to or resulting from participation or downloading any materials in the sweepstakes. Co-Sponsors are not responsible for late, lost, illegible, incomplete, stolen, postage due or misdirected entries. CAUTION: ANY ATTEMPT BY AN ENTRANT TO DELIBERATELY DAMAGE ANY WEB SITE OR UNDERMINE THE LEGITIMATE OPERATION OF THE SWEEPSTAKES MAY BE A VIOLATION OF CRIMINAL AND CIVIL LAWS AND SHOULD SUCH AN ATTEMPT BE MADE, CO-SPONSORS RESERVE THE RIGHT TO SEEK DAMAGES FROM ANY SUCH PERSON TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW.
  11. Winners List: To receive the names of major prize winner(s) by mail, send a stamped, self-addressed envelope to "LOTR:TTT Winner's Name Request", PO Box 56, Norfolk, Virginia 23501-0056 to be received by April 30th, 2003.
  12. Co-Sponsors: The Sponsors of this sweepstakes are Decipher, Inc., whose address is 253 Granby Street, Norfolk, Virginia 23510, and Cinemark USA, Inc. whose address is 3900 Dallas Parkway, Suite 500, Plano, TX, 75093.
